Kids2College, a program supported by Sallie Mae encouraging early post-secondary awareness, brought 100 5th graders from Sitka’s Elementary School to campus this week. Professors Reid Brewer and Joel Markis introduced students to fish morphology, data collection, and tools professionals in the fisheries industry use on a daily basis. Highlights included writing on Rite in the Rain paper–underwater, and coming face to face with a number of fish species common in their own backyard of Sitka Sound. A good number of the students left thinking, “I want to work with fish when I grow up!”
